Thomas Thynne also went by the nick-name of 'Tom of Ten Thousand' due to his wealth. Thomas had no issue. He matriculated in Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 14 December 1666 On the death of his uncle, Sir James Thynne, in 1670, he succeeded to the Longleat estates. Thomas was assassinated while in his coach, it is thought, the connivance of Count John Philip Konigsmark, a Swedish nobleman, who was a rejected suiter of Thomas's wife Elizabeth Percy.
