On the death of his uncle, Sir James Thynne, in 1670, he succeeded to the Longleat estates.
Thomas was assassinated while in his coach, it is thought, the connivance of Count John Philip Konigsmark, a Swedish nobleman, who was a rejected suiter of Thomas's wife Elizabeth Percy.
