John was knighted in 1547 he fought in the battle of Pinkie (10 Sept 1547)
Sir Charles Appleton bought Longleat in 1541 for £53, for John Thynne from Sir John Horsey. Longleat House, on the site of the dissolved priory of St. Radegund, had been begun in January 1567, when the original house caught fire and burnt down. The new house was completed in 1580.
John was the first of the Thynne family at longleat. The Thynne family sill live in the house today.
